For most college students, school starts in less than a month. We will all be heading to our respective universities in a flurry of packing, moving, and unpacking. There will be some tears and much celebration. One life gets left behind, while another is just beginning.
Many of you are excitedly preparing for your first year of college. And if you’re not excited, you should be! I won’t waste time telling you how awesome that first year is, because you can read the rest of my blog for that. But I will share a story with you…
Last night, a friend of mine texted me with a question about buying textbooks for school. She has a friend coming to Ball State for their first year and wanted advice about getting books. There are SO many options; it takes awhile to figure out what works best for you.
My first semester, I made the mistake of buying all my books from the school bookstore – if you want to spend more money than you have to, do it that way. Honestly, it was much easier, but not really worth the expense. The next time around, I took the time to research the best price, saving myself around $200. Finding used books or rentals is really the best way to go. Unless you plan to keep your books, RENT THEM! My personal preferences are Chegg.com and Amazon, and the BSU bookstore when necessary.
Of course, those are just my thoughts on the matter. Maybe some upperclassmen readers can give us their advice? Ultimately though, you just have to figure out what works best for YOU.

Miller Interview Day 2011
This past weekend was the Interview Day for the class of 2015 Miller Scholars. We will have a full 4 classes of honors students for the first time next year! For me, Saturday was especially exciting since I was not being interviewed this time around. I remember my own Interview Day was what made my college choice final - Ball State and MCOB was exactly where I wanted to be! This year though, I enjoyed being a student host rather than an interviewee. We spent most of the day with the prospective students, guiding them to their interviews, getting to know them, and sharing our experiences with them.
There were several current student panels for both prospective students and their parents. I was actually on a panel for the parents. It was interesting because I was the only freshman on a panel of sophomores and juniors. For the most part, I was unable to answer questions, especially those about internships and preparedness for them. But whenever there was a question about transitioning to college life or being a freshman on campus, it was all me!
I thoroughly enjoyed Interview Day 2011, especially getting to know my student interviewee. I am looking forward to meeting our next class of Miller Scholars in the fall!

Freshman Parking
Having a car on campus as a freshman is quite an experience…
Basically, the way it works is all freshman cars must be parked at the football stadium lot, which is a good distance from the main campus. Then the night before every home football game, ALL the cars there must be moved to an alternate location.
Every time there’s a game, the buses to the stadium are jam-packed with students going to move their cars. There was a game this past Saturday, actually. And on Friday, it snowed. Right as we were going to move our cars. So we waited through several full buses in the snow and cold. I love winter…ha.
The good part about moving our cars is we can park anywhere on campus (after 5 p.m. Friday) for the weekend. This comes in handy when you want to go somewhere on the weekends and your car just happens to be in the parking garage near your dorm. It works out nicely.
But then you have to move it back by Sunday night, or you get a ticket. I think it’s like by 3:30 a.m. on Monday morning actually. I have yet to have a run-in with Parking Services, but I’m sure it will happen and I’m sure you will hear about it.
My advice: bring your car if you want to be able to go places, but be prepared for the hassle of moving it for football games.
